That’s it, it’s summer and the sun is finally here to confirm it! But with the arrival of the summer, we are beset by an armada of questions, each one more annoying than the last. The worries related to our appearance resurface: redness, pimples, cellulite, hair, stretch marks, excess weight, small breasts, overdeveloped or underdeveloped muscles, so many reasons to feel ugly and unsuitable. What if we got rid once and for all of these beauty diktats that still prevail in the fashion world? What if we adopted the Body Positive, BoPo for friends? It’s a movement that advocates the acceptance of one’s body in general, regardless of age, sex, size or weight. Coming straight from the Anglo-Saxon countries, as its name shows, it has been gaining more and more followers in our countries for a few years. Here are 5 obvious reasons to join the BoPo.
It is a source of well-being
My body is my home! When we make the choice to accept our body envelope, whatever it is, we increase the love we have for ourselves, our self-confidence and the pleasure that comes from it. It is as simple as that. There will still be days when our reflection in the mirror does not fully satisfy us, but deciding to appreciate ourselves as unique individuals with potential definitely makes us happier and increases our well-being.
It allows us to focus on the essential
Adopting the Body Positive saves us time. Because the race to the Summer Body can be very time consuming: how many hours should we spend following the courses of Instagrammers who are determined to make our bodies perfect, how many hours should we spend in beauty salons? Our time is precious, let’s use it to question our real needs and to free our creativity. Let’s cultivate love and friendship, let’s garden, let’s stroll, let’s read. Let’s read, what a good idea! Eloïse (lemotquidelivre), librarian and founder of the Slow Reading Club, has selected for us some books that address the delicate issue of self-acceptance:
Rupi Kaur, ” Home Body “, Third poetic collection of this young feminist and committed Canadian. A little gem.
Léa Castore ” Corps à Coeur Coeur à corps ” Collection of illustrated testimonies, brought by people who have chosen to consider their physique with kindness. A feel good comic book!
Virginie Noar ” Le corps d’après ” Story of a childbirth and a fight against injunctions and conformity.
It sends a positive message to young people
The Body Positive Movement was born in the United States in 1996. It was founded by two women, Elizabeth Scott and Connie Sobczak, who were personally aware of eating disorders among teenagers. More than 20 years after the birth of the Movement, the pressure exerted by the media still does not spare young people, far from it. Many of them, under the influence of social networks, want to reach unrealistic goals in terms of appearance and even put their health at risk. One of BoPo’s missions is to relieve the pressure by spreading a benevolent message that difference is a strength. The movement thus works to increase the spirit of tolerance. Everyone is beautiful, everyone is pretty, that’s it! We can never say it enough.
The Body Positive has the humor for weapon!
Do you know Celeste Barber? This Australian comedian is hilarious in her parodies of stars: she imitates with great humor the poses adopted by the most stereotypical beauties of Instagram. She glorifies the natural and uninhibited beauty for our greatest pleasure. And she is not the only one. In Japan, Watanabe Naomi also uses parody to fight against the diktat of thinness in her country. Elected Woman of the Year in 2016 by Vogue Japan, she has established herself as an iconic figure for the defense of curvy women in Japan.
It makes you free
Finally the most obvious reason to join the Body Positive Movement is that it sets us free. Whatever our appearance, whether we are young or old, what a joy it is not to submit to society’s injunctions, to walk the streets and beaches with our heads held high and our hearts light, proud of our imperfections!
